Build A Bear

AGAIN I  AM LATE !  Many .many apologies for the delay in drawing the winner of this competition :

We put all the names in a bowl and Milo selected The winner, who is :

IRENE   - (facebook message for address details)

Many thanks to all who entered - some lovely names

More great giveaways will resume after Christmas - HO! HO! HO!

Having a birthday in December can tweak the purse strings, but to have two in the same month as Christmas is a real test when money is tight.  The twins recently had their 6th Birthday and thanks to my generous parents the "big" present was sorted ! They also received several cards containing money.   My first reaction is to put it into their savings accounts for "a rainy day" I certainly know all about them !  But then they saw an advert for Build a Bear !  "PLEASSSEEE MUMMY, can we spend our birthday money and buy a bear"

I must admit to never having ventured into our local store, it looks VERY expensive, the kind of luxury that we had to forego a long time ago. I popped onto twitter to ask the lovely tweeters what their view was of Build a Bear !  It was a resounding thumbs up, although like me, a few thought the costs soon mounted up with clothes, hearts, shoes etc.  But as a birthday treat, it was a lovely idea.  I found out they even do parties !  And for those of you into apps they have just launched their first mobile application for the ipad, iphone & iPod Touch !  http://www.buildabear.co.uk/app/  with exclusive offers for app users.

We collected the twins from school and along we went, Monday night after school, best time to go. There were only a few customers. What an experience ! I can see now why people love it in there so much.

The boys had a wonderful time with the staff, they were friendly, paitent and went out of their way to make it a great experience for the boys.  Milo chose a Obi bear and Jarvis a Darth Vader, complete with Star wars sound track in their paws .

When I arrived home I was thrilled to receive a tweet from the Lovely Estelle from Build A Bear offering us a birthday trip to the local store !  As we had just arrived home ! Doh! Timing is everything !  I asked if it would be possible to have a bear to giveaway on my blog, and guess what ! She sent me one ! Whoop!

I have a gorgeous velvet puppy, complete with pretty pink pj,s and slippers.

To HAT or not to HAT that is the question !

What ?  What !!!  .........

The snow hasn't quite reached us in Devon yet, but boy was it cold this morning ! Not just chilly, but biting cold !  I wrapped the twins up in lots of layers, gloves and their new trapper hats.  Put on my scarf and thick coat, steeped outside the door and nearly fell over with the shock of it.

Nothing for it, I really will have to put that wolly black and white stripe hat with the pom-pom on top on!   On it went, "That's a nice hat mummy, can I wear it ?"   "err No sweetie you have your nice new hat"  "you look funny mummy "  "Thank you darling".

Off we trot to school.  Thankfully not meeting up with any of the other mums (or dads) along the way, but glad for the protection it gave.  "I'll take it off when I get to the gates" I tell myself.  Not bloody likely, when we get there. I swear its minus 200 !

Oh No !  There's the deputy head doing his morning meet and greet !  "Hello boys, nice hats "
"oh! erm, hello Mrs Jones, errm Nice ....  Cold morning isn't it ! "

I walk bravely on, by this time my nose is running and my eyes are streaming, can't wipe them because I am carrying 2 lunch boxes and 2 school bags.  "oh! God !  there are all the young yummy mummies in their pretty pink knitted hats with flap ear things.  They glance in my direction and look quickly away.  "does she not know what she looks like ?"

I march on, head down.  Phew, there are "the old gang" made up of us older mums and dads all wearing sensible warm clothes. The dads glance  (they wouldn't notice if I turned up naked with tassles on - well maybe one might ) " cold isn't it ! "  "yes, certainly is "   I choke through snot and tears, "put my new hat on - ha ! ha! "  trying to make light of my horrendous appearance seems only to succeed in drawing even more pitying looks in my direction. Stop LOOKING at me, its only a HAT !

In the classroom I make the mistake of pulling the offending item off my head !  BIG MISTAKE ! I mean BIG MISTAKE ! A static jolt that sends my gorgeous grey locks flying skyward as if they too, are so mortified to be part of my being they can't get away quick enough !

I can feel my face turning bright red with the combined heat of the classroom and the horror of it all. Plonk the hat back on my head, kiss the twins bye and march off down the road to the safety of my home.

HATS ! Burgh ! You can keep em.

The twins bedroom is still an ongoing project, we are almost there but I am determined to get their bedding right.  My search for the perfect match seems to have been endless.  I know what I am looking for but can I find it in the right colour and for a not silly price !  Recently the owner of Babou (another local lady) started following me on twitter.  I always try to check out new followers and boy was I glad I did this one !

Beautiful childrens bedding and accessories in perfect, classic colours.

I Love, love the red gingham and will certainly be popping back there in the New year. (With the twins birthdays and Christmas both in December, its a pretty tight month).

Go over and take a look, buy British and support local UK Businesses xx

Red and white gingham duvet set in 100% super soft cotton !

Co-ordinating Sack for all those boy essentials

Switzerland ! Dream on .......

I received an email out of the blue from an old friend who lives in Switzerland. Apart from being wonderful to hear from them after such a long time I allowed myself to get all excited at the prospect of a visit. If we could find the travel costs, they want us to take the family to stay! Visions of Christmas in Switzerland, a beautiful country, particularly in Winter and the chance for the boys to learn to ski!

Apart from last year, we don’t get much snow in Devon. The twins were amazed and thrilled by it when they saw it, but we were woefully unprepared clothes wise. Whilst having my trip to Switzerland 5 minute fantasy I decided to have a look at what snow outfits are available online that could also earn their money in the wet & sometimes cold climate of Devon.

I came across this stylish boys all in one snowsuit by Dare2B Kids available at Marshall Leisure, its practical and warm and even more wonderful, it’s on sale for only £35 a massive 42 % saving off the RRP of £60.

After number crunching and doing the sums it’s clear that although a wonderful opportunity, we really won’t be able to go to Switzerland for a visit. We just don’t have the kind of cash spare to pay for a family of 5 and everything needed to make it a reality.

Never mind, there’s always next year!

 Maybe ski lessons instead ………

Classic, Stylish Cool Boys Shoes

I've always been a lover of classic clothes and shoes for children.  You won't see my sons wearing over priced, character laden flashing shoes !  When I came across the stylish Cool Boys Shoes online store, I was really pleased to see that not only were they indeed stylish and cool, but also fantastic value for money.

Owner Angela was often asked after trips to Portugal, where she  purchased her son's shoes.  Identifying the gap in the market for affordable classic boys styles she decided to set up her online business.  These shoes and boots all made from quality leather, scream quality and class !  I love them !  Pop over and take a look.  Also on sale are boots, school and baby shoes.  I for one will be buying from there soon.......

Cindy Crawford Meaningful Beauty and Me

I am finally beginning to feel like a member of the human race again, after taking to my bed (something I have not had the luxury of doing in a long, long time) with a sickness and achy type bug, imagine how thrilled I was to receive this gorgeous package of grown up girls face care products to review !!

Those who know me will testify, I am not the best at looking after my skin. I am the jump in the shower, scrub with soap and slap on the "whatever happens to be lying around" kind of girl !  Unfortunately I think age might just be beginning to catch up with me! and all those horrified friends who are constantly telling me to "drink 8 glasses of water a day and cleanse, tone and moisturise", might now need to be listened to !

This lovely set from the gorgeous Miss Crawford might just be my salvation!  Packaged in a clean, fresh White and Silver (perfect for sitting in my all white bedroom), it consists of :

Cleanse - Skin Softening Cleanser

Maintenance 1 - Day Moisture with SPF

Maintenance 2 - Night Fluide

Eyes - Eye Crème

Masque - Facial Masque

Décolleté - Décolleté and Neck Crème

Glowing Serum – Skin Revitalising Serum

I promise faithfully to use it as directed until its all used up and report back the results.  Now for the shocker, here's me in all my glory, Freshly scrubbed from the shower, post sickness bug.  I'll update this post in a few weeks.  If the devine smell of these products is anything to go by this is one regime I might just stick to !

Oh no! Not the school photo

No 1 son came home from school last week with the dreaded school photographs. I say dreaded because he suffers from a condition called Enamel hyperplasia meaning he has a lack of Enamel on his teeth, and had to have 8 teeth removed several years ago. The resulting re-growth gave him gappy, discoloured teeth. He never smiles in photographs and as a result he hates his school pictures. We then have to endure tears and tantrums about how his teeth look and his life is ruined!

He has a rigorous dental routine and regular check ups but unlike braces which are offered for overcrowding of teeth on the national health, we were offered no support or solution unless we paid a vast amount of money, way beyond our means to get all his teeth capped ! We were even unable to get his teeth whitened until he is 18.

As a result although being a lovely looking lad (well I would say that wouldn’t I) He is hugely self conscious and will not smile with an open mouth. He covers his mouth all the time with his hand and bows his head when talking to people he has never met before.

With hindsight I wish I had taken out dental insurance along with our home and health insurance. We may then have been able to do something for him and the rest of the family, helping us with covering costs. Especially as it now appears one of the twins may have similar problems.  He has already suffered from teasing in the playground due to a black front tooth caused, the dentist says by a trauma to his mouth but again, which nothing can be done about. We are hoping that when he looses his milk teeth this one will grow back healthy.

In a society which is increasingly obsessed with looks, perhaps it’s a small price to pay?

A few of my favourite things

As a child I don't remember having much that held any memories for me from my families past.  There were no heirlooms or favourite items passed down through the family.   I think probably, this is partly why I now surround myself with items that hold memories of places visited, special occasions or my children.

Whilst on honeymoon we found a wonderful little shop crammed full of beautiful bespoke, whimsical and limited edition gorgeousness.  When I saw these prints I had to buy them, I felt as if the artist had made them just for me, particularly as we had left my young son at home with my parents whilst we went away and I missed him so much.

I wanted this print in particular to always remind me of my wonderful honeymoon but also of how much I loved and missed my son.  Entitled "Quiet Pride ", it sums up how I felt then and still do about my eldest son.

My husband choose this next print entitled " No more secret" and it has such special meaning for us.

I choose this one entitled  "Good Jumper" for my husband

Ugly Children's Clothing

With ranges called "Lice" "Milk" and  "Ugly"  The fabulously named  Ugly Children's Company  makes no apologies for being for boys ! Yay !  Saying that they have recently introduced a lice dress to the collection !

Fresh as Milk this gorgeous collection has a pattern that is an exact replica of a pattern used on norwegian milk cartons !

I love the Lice Marius Body available in a range of colours and based on  a classic Marius knitting pattern worn by norwegians since the 50´s.

The ugly collection is a range of limited edition bodies.  Be warned, there are some erm, "interesting" logo's.  Not for the faint hearted !  You have been warned.

When I came across Aarrekid I was immediately drawn to this lovely collection.  Comprising of  black and white with a spash of colour, the quirky "space Journey" pattern is designed by textile designer Miia Kajaani .    Based in Helsinki, I think this great brand will be one to watch when it hits UK.

He's rarely seen, but he came to visit from ToysRus

He's rarely been spotted, let alone filmed.  But he paid us a special visit from his favourite toy store - ToysRus.  I first became aware that we had a visitor in the house when I heard a rustle behind the curtain.....

He's a shy kinda guy and can make a quick exit

I spied him trying to hide in the twins toys cupboard

and snapped him catching up with his great mate Geoffrey Giraffe

He was feeling less shy and at home in the twins bedroom so we called them upstairs to say HI!

To say that we were thrilled when we saw Bigfoot in our latest box from ToysRus was an understatement! We would never consider or be able to afford to spend that amount of money on a single item for our children and although the price made us gasp, he is worth every single penny !  He's also on sale at the moment at ToysRus !!

Standing about 18 inches high and weighing approx 2 kilos he is a sturdy, solid toy, built for rough and tumble play.
As you could see from the film, initially Milo was surprised by him and the noise he made, but once they got used to him the twins absolutely adored him.  He has big blue eyes, eyebrows that move and soft fluffy hair which really helps take off the hard edge .

With about 80 actions and sayings he is not one of those toys that has a few stock phrases that you soon get fed up of hearing.  He continually takes you by surprise with his random sayings that can be set off by touching him or by different sequences on the remote control.

The Twins LOVE his TRUMPING and he apologises afterwards too !

He counts, sleeps, tumbles, walks, laughs, roars, rolls his eyes, talks and more.

The remote control is big and really easy to hold and use, no need to be able to read. Large self explanatory buttons so little ones can quickly learn how to control him without tears and tantrums.

"The remote control has a toggle and six buttons. The toggle allows him to walk forward and backwards and the six buttons are happy, angry, sleep, fun, ball, and exercise. Press the happy button to hear him laugh, press the angry button to hear him roar and watch him pound his fists or raise his arms above his head. The sleep button makes him go to sleep and features fun sounds like snoring! Press the ball button and hear him say things like 'play' and watch him throw the ball! Big Foot also features three interaction buttons on his body: belly, mouth and hand."

We absolutely adore him and he has taken pride and place in the twins room.

Recommended for age 3 - 8 that's right on the button although as adults hubby and I had a ball with him too.

Priced at around £100 its a lot of money but then there is a lot to him and compartively we think he's excellent value for money.  Also he's on sale at the moment at ToysRus

Batteries AA batteries required for the controller and a rechargable battery pack is included.  Takes 4 hours to recharge and lasts in Bigfoot for about 2 hours at a time.  Which we found was plenty enough time for one session.
